RFID-based TLD badge control for radiation safety teams

144 slots, slot-level validation, SMS alerts

A radiation safety operation needed to cut manual errors out of TLD badge handling. The TLD Rack Automation System used RFID, slot-level validation, and SMS alerts to keep badge storage, return tracking, and audit trails reliable.

What the team was up against

Manual TLD badge management creates real audit and compliance risk: badges land in the wrong slot, missing badges go unnoticed for too long, logbook entries drift from reality, and large badge volumes are hard to manage by hand.

They needed:

  • Reduced manual badge-tracking error
  • Faster identification of non-returned badges
  • Slot-level traceability
  • Better audit readiness
  • Scalable architecture as headcount grows

What we built

RFID/NFC readers at every slot identify each badge as it's placed or removed. ESP32 PoE controllers feed a central Raspberry Pi server that handles validation. Slot-level LEDs and buzzers give immediate operator feedback, and an LTE Cat-1 modem pushes SMS alerts to the safety officer when something is off.

Outcomes

Fewer manual tracking errors

Faster notice when a badge is missing

Slot-level traceability for audits

Scalable rack architecture
